Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro Review

When Blackmagic Design announced its four new HyperDeck Studio broadcast recording devices, every live video producer knew they were going to revolutionize the game. With full record playback status, dual media slots, and several inputs and outputs, all of the HyperDeck Studio models make it easy to record and playback quality media to make your broadcasts more engaging.

These new HyperDeck Studios aren’t the first iteration of Blackmagic Design’s hard disk recording devices, though. However, the upgraded hardware design and codec support really bring them into a more coveted category of broadcast equipment. All of the HyperDeck Studio Models include support for ProRes, DNx and H.264 formats (HypderDeck Studio 4K Pro also has support for H.265).

Blackmagic Design sent us the Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro to review and test in a professional live production workflow.

What is the HyperDeck Studio?

The HyperDeck Studio enables you to record broadcast-quality videos directly onto SD cards and SSD media. It supports recording to support recording to H.264, Apple ProRes or DNxHD files with either PCM or AAC audio. Then, you can easily mount it to your computer and access the recorded files with your choice of video software.

The HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro is the most advanced model available. It has a broadcast-style front panel and LCD screen to monitor the status of your recording. It includes 6G-SDI with fill and key out, SDI monitoring and records H.264, H.265, ProRes or DNx in SD, HD and Ultra HD in standards up to 2160p60.

Blackmagic Hyperdeck Studio 4K Pro Tech Specs

The HyperDeck Studio can be used for recording broadcast masters, ISO recording, digital signage, broadcast archive, and, our favorite, fill and key playback. The HyperDeck Studio Plus and Pro models play ProRes 4444 HD files to the 2 separate SDI fill and key outputs. This means you can use the HyperDeck studio for graphics, broadcast animation, and fill and key playback in Ultra HD. The ProRes 4444 file’s alpha channel is converted to the key SDI output for keying in a live production switcher like the ATEM Mini.

We made a video showing off the Hyperdeck Studio 4K Pro’s features and diving deeper into what makes it such a vital part of your live production workflow.
