Instead of having to do tape sessions a day or so after the excitement of the broadcast has worn off, I can help guide them live. It allows me to have a real producer when we do a show. The producer can help the talent through the broadcast by giving stats, forecasting upcoming storylines, etc.

The key to good audio for live production, as in all productions is isolation. By isolation I am referring to isolating, or emphasizing your desired audio against the ambient, or unwanted audio. Like almost everything else, the key is improving the signal to noise ratio.
How Wilmington University Used Wireless Video for Spring Commencement
Wilmington University, a non-profit undergraduate & graduate college based in New Castle, Delaware, found the answer with zero-delay wireless video. Essentially, wireless video is the sending of A/V from camera to switcher completely wirelessly, removing the need for any HDMI or SDI cables. This means that previously stationary cameras can now be roaming, capturing the action from exciting new angles and giving the audience a more engaging show.

I recently got my hands on NewBlueFx’s Titler Live 4 and that was the answer. I used Titler Live at my previous school for our sports shows but I never used it for news. One of the things I remembered about Titler Live is how easy it was to build graphics. One of the things I was most excited about with Titler Live 4 was the integration of spreadsheets into the serving of graphics info.
What Professional Development Should Be
Camp T&I meets each year during the first week of June. It is a partnership between the Georgia Department of Education and the Career Technical & Agricultural Education Resource Network. I first attended Camp T&I in the summer of 2012. I was blown away. Not by the dark room in the back of a community college in Savannah. Or the lack of internet access. Or the fact that as teachers introduced themselves, I was the newest to the profession by 4 or 5 years. (And had only taught part-time…) I was blown away by the fact that all of those teachers shared so freely. Shared lesson plans. Shared successes. Shared failures. I knew immediately there was something special here.

New Kid in School - Turning in My New Kid Card
We did a ton of really cool things. Invented new segments - Word On The Street Wednesday being the most memorable. We had some failures (The Tiger Wood vs. Santa Clause Joke that somehow made it through my review of the script). Overall though, I would say that the first year of the program was more than a success. We won NFHS Network Best New Program and Highlight of the Year but more importantly to me was that we won the hearts, minds, and imaginations of a new batch of students who had never experienced a video production class.
Seriously, You Can Stream From Anywhere
After using the VidiU Go for three or so months now, I have to say that I am beyond impressed with how well it works and how dependable it has been for me. I typically stream to youtube and the NFHS Network and have had no issue with either. I definitely suggest you give it a shot - especially if you are a school that has to travel a great distance in order to play other teams or are in an area where internet connectivity is rare if at all.

How did PTZ Optics cameras make my life easy? Well… If you have read my stuff for a while you know that I hate graduation. Graduation and cats may be on the same level when it comes to how much I hate them. Graduation always brings something to the table that makes me want to scream and throw things. This year was no different.
New Kid in School - Month 10 of 10
It’s all over. As of the 24th of May, the 2018-2019 school year was over for me. Graduation began at 8 pm and was over by 10 pm. It’s all over… So what’s next? Reflection and Preparation. What a year. Over 120 live sporting events. Over 120 newscasts. Hundreds of hours in the classroom. Hundreds of miles on the car. But it was all worth it when we got to place the first foundation stone.

Small Parabolic vs. Shotgun Mic
Many believe that all shotgun microphones have very tight pickup patterns similar to the polar pattern on the right. Unfortunately, this polar pattern shown is for a lobar microphone while only very few shotgun microphones have a lobar pattern. Most low-cost shotgun have a cardioid polar pattern while medium cost shotgun microphones have hyper-cardioid, or super-cardioid polar patterns.

The Sound Shark is the smallest parabolic microphone I have ever seen. It will actually work with the shoe mount on the camera and not blow out the balance on a tripod.
